Linen and cotton are the two great natural fibers for warm-weather scarves. Both breathe, both soften with wear, and both love being washed. But they're different characters. Here's how to choose.
Texture and look
Linen has visible slubs — the small natural irregularities in flax yarn — that give it an organic, artisanal texture. It looks relaxed and slightly undone in the best way, and it holds a beautiful crinkle. Cotton is smoother and more uniform; a twill-weave cotton scarf looks polished and tailored.
Feel and temperature
Linen is the most breathable natural fiber and actively wicks moisture, which is why it feels cool against skin — the reason it's a summer staple from Provence to Kyoto. Cotton is softer out of the box, gentler for very sensitive skin, and slightly warmer, making it the better three-season choice.
Drape and body
Linen has body: it stands away from the neck slightly and creates airy volume. Cotton, especially fine or crinkled cotton, drapes closer and softer. If you like a sculptural, boho look, choose linen; if you like a fluid, cozy wrap, choose cotton.
Aging and care
