The 'Sixteen Muses' Silk Scarf

Yes, this is 100% mulberry silk — 16 momme twill, the heavier of our two weights. The square is divided into a grid of sixteen panels, and in each one a single woman is painted in black ink, wearing a gown, a coat, a full skirt or a trouser suit. The grounds alternate between bright red, cornflower blue, blush pink, cream and pale grey.

• 16 MOMME MULBERRY SILK TWILL 100% mulberry silk, printed on the face. Twill has a fine diagonal grain and a matte depth of colour, with enough body to hold a knot instead of sliding out of one.

• SIXTEEN INK FIGURES A four-by-four grid of painted fashion figures, one per panel, on alternating red, cornflower, blush and cream grounds.

• SIZE AND STYLING Measures approximately 34 x 34 in. Folded corner to corner it covers the shoulders; rolled thin it becomes a headband, a ponytail tie or a band around a bag strap.

• THE FOLD CHANGES THE PICTURE Because the design is a grid rather than a centred motif, a different set of panels shows depending on how it is tied.

• THE EDGE Each of the four edges is rolled and stitched by hand, which is what gives the border its slight plumpness.

• CARE Hand wash cool with a mild detergent for silk, or dry clean. Do not bleach, do not tumble dry, cool iron on the reverse and lay flat in the shade.
